Our junior tennis team delivered County success for the third time in 12 months at the week-end. This time it was the Boys' under 16 team who won the Hampshire & IOW Junior Club League trophy. Having been drawn against all mainland tennis clubs in their group, the team won all of these matches comfortably to earn their place in the final. They then had to wait several weeks to find out who their opponents would be as Southampton ITI, Winchester, Littleton and The Avenue tennis clubs still had matches to play.
Littleton Tennis Club eventually came out top of their group and travelled over to Ryde for the home final on Saturday 29th March. Despite blustery & difficult conditions all the boys battled and their commitment to work hard as a team was reflected in the final result.
In Round 1 Matt Olive (seeded 3) & Connor Grant (seeded 4) got off to a great start, defeating their opponents comfortably and confidently. Number 1 seed Ryan Todd over-powered his opponent, to take his match in straight sets. Ricky Pullinger (seeded 2) was narrowly defeated by his big hitting Littleton opponent.
Entering round 2 with a 2-1 lead to Ryde Lawn, Connor Grant played solid tennis to take us to 3-1. The final two matches saw the doubles pairing of Ricky & Ryan and the singles match of Matt Olive both going to nail biting third set tie breaks in which the boys were just squeezed out by the mainland club. This resulted in a final 3-3 rubbers score. However the final tally showed us comfortably ahead on games (65-43), and the title therefore was ours - Very well done to all concerned!
